Timbers survive furious late rally to beat FCD
PORTLAND, Ore. – A memorable first weekend of MLS soccer in the Rose City concluded with another Timbers victory in front of a loud sellout crowd at JELD-WEN Field as Portland survived a furious late rally fromFC Dallas to grab another three points at home with a 3-2 win on Sunday.
Jack Jewsbury and Kenny Cooper each scored in the first half, while Rodney Wallace added the third for Portland in the second. That three goal advantage, however, was whittled to one in the final 10 minutes byDavid Ferreira and Brek Shea.
FCD nearly tied the game in extra time, when Ferreira fired a potential game-tying shot that hit the upright.

In addition to it being the Timbers’ second win of the season, Portland moved into a league-leading tie for goals scored with nine. Seven of those tallies have come in the two-game home-opening weekend that started with Thursday's 4-2 win over Chicago.
The Timbers got on the board in the 13th minute when midfielder Kalif Alhassan found Jewsbury at the edge of the box. The Timbers captain took a shot that ricocheted off the post and FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman to find its way into the net.
Then, in the 34th minute, Cooper took advantage of his 6-foot-3 frame to rise above the defenders and get a head on a Jewsbury corner kick. He directed that cross masterfully over Hartman and inside the left upright.
In the first two minutes of the second half, Portland appeared to add to their lead. A cross from Steve Purdy skipped through Hartman’s hands and onto the path of forward Jorge Perlaza, who calmly tapped it in. However, the goal was ruled offside and the goal was called off.
It didn't take long for the Timbers to again break through FCD's defense and, in the 55th minute, they would add their third goal. Alhassan made a brilliant move to slip through four defenders. He poked the ball ahead and defender Rodney Wallace finished it into the back of the net.
FC Dallas pressed for a goal in the final 30 minutes, but could close any of their chances and were unable to sustain effective possession. That would change in the 83rd minute, when Ferreira finally made his presence felt. The reigning MLS MVP slid onto a pass from Shea and directed the ball past goalkeeper Jake Gleeson.
Less than two minute later, Ferreira and Shea woudl connect again, but this time, it was Ferreira who served the assist. The Colombian sent a chipped pass over the defense and into the path of a streaking Shea, who got onto the end of the pass to beat Gleeson.
Dallas scrambled to find the equalizer in extra time, but an intervention from Gleeson and the post kept FCD from tying the match.
With the win, Portland improved their record to 2-2-1. Dallas, meanwhile, are now 1-3-1.

Timbers Army looks to match impressive debut
As FCD come to town, Timbers faithful back in the spotlight
So where does Timbers Army go from here?
After wowing an ESPN audience with its non-stop enthusiasm for singing, flag-waving and bouncing up and down Thursday night, the supporters group in the north end of JELD-WEN Field was lauded and discussed as much as the Timbers themselves after a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Fire.
The second home game comes Sunday against FC Dallas. Dave Hoyt, president of the 107 Independent Supports Trust, the non-profit booster group behind Timbers Army, said the goal now is to maintain that level of energy while continuing to grow.
“Anything we can do to make (Thursday) night happen again, that’s what we want to do,” Hoyt said. “We want to see if we can make that the regular experience.”
After the game, Timbers head coach John Spencer called the atmosphere the best he’d ever seen in American soccer.
“We have some glow on us (Friday) morning,” Hoyt said.
The Timbers Army is comprised of smaller groups located in the sections at the north end of the stadium, centered around section 107. It is not an exclusive club and its ranks are swelling.
Even the 107ists, which has membership fees, has topped 1,000 members – with 200-300 new members joining in the past month.
The level of organization was evident in the giant triptych banner displays that were hoisted up by elaborate rigging prior to the game.
The group’s design team began with a spit-balling session to discuss ideas. Supplies were ordered. Then the group rented a warehouse big enough to work on the project and store it.

Hoyt said good ideas tend to rise up and find the right people.
“We try to be very open,” Hoyt said. “Some of our greatest things happened because someone showed up at a pub and said, ‘I’m from here, we do this, we could do it like this, and no one else in the U.S. is doing it.'
"Sometimes the ideas are too familiar and sometimes we go, ‘Wow, we should have done that yesterday.’”
Timbers Army takes many of its cues from supporters’ traditions in Germany, central Europe, Turkey and Greece.
“We try to take the best parts of that, the less strident parts, and marry that with an English sense of community,” Hoyt said. “We use some alchemy.”
The end result was equal parts mosh pit and revival on Thursday night.
John Strong, the 25-year-old radio and TV voice of the Timbers, said the most satisfying part of opening night was seeing two years of buildup and promises of a great atmosphere live up to, and exceed, expectations.
“How many people that were not soccer fans before Thursday said, ‘That was cool. I want to go to a game?’” Strong asked. “That was pretty significant.”
Strong was a proud member of Timbers Army before moving into the broadcast booth in 2006.
“As much as Portland now says how do we keep up with ourselves," Strong said, "other cities have to figure out how to match Portland."

Perlaza the hero as Timbers win in thrilling home opener
PORTLAND, Ore. — On a memorable night for the soccer fans of Portland—and around MLS—the only way it could have gone wrong would have been a loss on the field.
But the Portland Timbers, inspired by the wall of noise coming from the north end of JELD-WEN Field, made sure that the memory of opening night for their stadium didn't go wrong, as they won their first ever MLS game, 4-2, over the Chicago Fire on a rainy night in the Rose City.
First-half goals from Jorge Perlaza and Rodney Wallace gave the Timbers a 2-0 advantage at halftime. Perlaza struck again three minutes into the second half, before the Fire were able to pull two back and make things interesting. But a fourth goal in the 84th minute iced the match.
The rain did nothing to keep the Timbers Army, the club's massive supporter group, from showing up in droves, singing and revealing colorful tifo displays from the first minute.

They looked set to cheer for a goal in just the 11th minute, when Kenny Cooper headed in a Jack Jewsbury corner kick. But the linesman's flag was up, indicating the outswinging kick had gone over the line on its way into the center.
The celebrations started up for real in the 29th minute. Colombia striker Perlaza has struggled to convert chances so far this season, but he showed no such problems when he scored the first-ever goal at JELD-WEN. He ran onto a pass from Kalif Alhassan, cut back against a defender and onrushing Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson, and fired into an empty net. The stadium erupted, and Timber Joey, the club's mascot, sliced his first slab from the log. A slab is sliced off each time the Timbers score.
Timber Joey had to cut another slab nine minutes later. Jewsbury's free kick into the box was weakly cleared by the Fire backline. Wallace, up from the left defender position, raced forward and pounded the loose ball into the net from 20 yards.
After the break, the Timbers got a lucky bounce when Wallace's cross bounced away from Johnson. Perlaza pounced on on the loose ball and tapped it into the net.
The Fire created relatively few chances until second-half sub Dominic Oduro came on. The speedy Ghanaian striker had a one-on-one chance in the 60th minute but Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson made a diving save.
Then, in the 66th minute, Chicago broke through. Portland defender Eric Brunner tried to slide in and punch the ball away from Pappa. But the ball came off Brunner’s cleat and skidded past Gleeson into the net.
Suddenly, the Fire had more life to them. In the 81st minute, they made things even more interesting. Pappa got some space just outside the Timbers' box, turned, and fired a ball over Gleeson’s head to draw the Fire within a goal.
But the comeback was not to be. In the 84th minute, a moment of chaos in front of the Fire goal after another Jewsbury corner kick ended when defender Dasan Robinson knocked the ball into his own goal.
With the win, the Timbers move up into a tie for 7th place in the West, while Chicago remain in 8th in the East.

Timbers, adoring fans make the most of a historic night
PORTLAND, Ore. — There was something sweetly poetic when the Timbers Army broke into song in the final minutes of the Portland Timbers’ home opener Thursday night, filling their new home with a swooning rendition one of the greatest love ballads in pop history.
Fitting, perhaps, because the 1961 hit “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” was originally crooned by none other than Elvis Presley, who four years before recording that track first wiggled and writhed his way into Portland’s hearts at Multnomah Stadium, which sat on the current site of the sparkling new JELD-WEN Field.
Presley pulled up to the stadium that night in 1957 in a white limousine, a fact fondly recalled on a series of plaques that line the walls at JELD-WEN recalling all the eclectic past heroes of the stadium: Satchel Paige, President William Howard Taft, Norm Van Brocklin, Clive Charles.
The Timbers Army didn’t arrive at the stadium Thursday in a stretch limo, but rather by foot, bicycle and light rail. More than a few female fans were smeared in celebratory green eye shadow. The men chiseled their facial hair into mock-Horstaches and painted their faces, and then diligently took their place in a line that wrapped around the stadium hours before the Timbers even considered opening the gates.
They sang, they chanted, they loitered and they littered, happily smudging their fingerprints all over maybe one of the most electric nights at Morrison St. and 18th Ave. since the King reigned over rock n’ roll.
By the time the chorus of the Army’s song arrived, it was clear. This was truly a love song from a soggy but satisfied troop to the ears of the ones they adored, who by the 88th minute had all but sealed a 4-2 win over theChicago Fire and given their fans plenty to love.
“I don’t think you’ve seen an atmosphere like that in American soccer history,” Timbers coach John Spencer said. “Ever.”
They were opportunistic, scrappy and bullish when they had to be, capitalized on more than a few Fire miscues and practically muscled the last goal across the line as the Army just about spilled from the stands in glee.
“Apart from my wife giving birth to my children, it was the best feeling that I’ve ever experienced,” said Spencer, the wonderfully candid Scotsman who played with Chelsea in the 1990s, among other clubs. “I wanted to win this game tonight more than I did the FA Cup in 1994.”
Spencer and the Timbers left the locker room doors open as the rain fell and the crowd filed in Thursday night. They wanted the players to understand what they were getting into, what sort of sonic boom awaited them when the time finally came, what it was like to be serenaded by lyrics like “We are mental, we are green, we are the greatest football supporters that the world has ever seen.”
And every last gasp, every ebb and flow of a crowd on the edge had nowhere to escape. The Timbers’ new field is delightfully built below street level, trapping most of the noise and giving MLS perhaps its loudest and most authentic atmosphere on any coast, in any time zone.
“We were expecting it, but it was still very, very special,” Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson said. “Everybody claimed that we thought that we had one of the best environments, but this was incredible.”
Will this one win turn the Timbers’ season into a surge to the MLS Cup? Who knows. They showed more than a few flaws on their big night. They’ll lose probably as much as they’ll win this season if the majority of MLS expansion tradition holds true, and they won’t always get to celebrate the way they did at the end of this one.
But for at least one night, they seized the moment when it came, gave their fans a reason to fall in love and, most importantly, wrote the first lyrics of a song they’ve only just begun to sing.
